6 Women (and One Guy!) Share Their Bikini Wax Horror Stories

Sometimes things go way too far in the name of beauty.

Summer’s here, and you know what that means: Hair-removal season is officially upon us. While many women opt for a razor in the quest for a super-smooth bikini area, some put the fate of their fine china into the hands of a professional. Waxing can be so worth it when you truly get what you’re paying for. But if someone screws up? Well, just read these stories to see all the different ways a wax can go wrong.

“First of all, it took an hour instead of the 15 minutes it usually takes. She was doing, like, three hairs at a time. She said she was going so slowly because it was less painful, but on top of her being so incredibly slow, it was also the most painful one I've ever had. It was a nine on the pain scale when they’re usually a six. She also kept trying to set me up with her son by saying unsubtle stuff like, ‘I have a son your age. He’s single. Are you single? He's very cute.’ I just responded like, ‘Mhmm, that’s nice.’ Finally, she cut me with scissors while she was trimming. It was my first and last time with her. I called my mom and cried and raged afterwards.” —Alana C.

“Last time I got a Brazilian, she handily forgot my butt. The next time my husband and I were in bed, he noticed—and pulled the strands. I'll never live it down.” —Rachel Z.

“I went to a really respected salon that has locations all over the country. I hadn't had a wax in maybe a year, and before that had only had one or two, so I definitely wasn’t an expert. Because of this, my waxer starts telling me she's going to ‘do something special’ and I'm going to ‘love it.’ I don't really like watching while they do it, so I just let her be. Bad choice. She finishes, and as I'm looking down, she says she gave me what they call a ‘Clit Hit,’ which means they leave a patch of hair on top of the clitoris as if it were Hitler's mustache. I tried to be nice, but I was like, ‘Oh, no, please take that off,’ to which she replied that she couldn't because my skin would get really irritated! Now that I wax regularly, I know this was total crap. So I had to leave the place with a random ball of hair—mind you, she didn't even trim it!—and wait until my skin ‘wouldn't get irritated’ to get it off. It was really awful-looking.” —Mercedes T.

“There was one lady who was obsessed with making sure she didn't miss every freaking hair or suspicion of a hair. She waxed me twice with the hard wax, then two other times with the soft wax, and then attacked me with a tweezer. Detail-oriented was definitely a drawback there. She would show me the strips each time she took them off, exclaiming ‘Look! They're like little soldiers!’ I had a date right after, and I was in so much pain that I was hysterically laughing. I also tried doing it myself a few times. I had gotten tired of paying so much to do it, and it looked super easy. I became overconfident. I may have had a glass of wine and locked myself in my room with a wax pot. I put down the first line of wax, then I proceeded to chicken out. I was too damn nervous to tear it off. I kept trying to give myself pep talks, but they were not effective. When I finally did start tearing it off, it was coming off in millimeters. I eventually got it off in between bouts of panic, remorse, and hope that if I just put my pants back on and went along with the rest of my day, it would all disappear. Lesson of the story: If you are going to put your genitals through burning pain, definitely pay someone else to do it!” —Barbara N.

“I stopped going to my old waxer because she would take 45 minutes to an hour instead of the 10 to 15 minutes it should take. But the reason she would take that long was because she spent the entire time talking about her problems and existential crises. Lots of times, she would just go off on tangents and say weird things like, ‘I’m an iron butterfly, baby.’ She also had issues with her weight and would talk a lot about how her sister bullied her about it. Then she would get emotional, and I’d be thinking, ‘Please don’t cry on my vagina.’ Also, she worked from home and would complain about her boyfriend and son, who were in the house. And she charged me double what I pay now!” —Nora E.

“I went to a salon I had used before that I liked because it was cheaper than most. I was living in New York at the time, and, as a grad student, any dollar saved was a dollar I could spend on food or my favorite vice: coffee. The girl there was a new face. I didn't know it then, but it turns out she was newly hired and had never waxed someone else before. Too bad I didn't know that until much later. She spread long strips of wax on my bikini and upper legs since I usually wax both together. Then the torture began. Apparently, this woman used the wrong type of wax, and it wouldn't come off. She applied more wax and tried again...and again and again. It wouldn't come off right, and while she pulled the strips of paper, she pulled my skin with it, too, totally missing the hairs, mind you. It got to a point where she had to call her boss into the room. The look on her face when she realized what her employee had done told me everything I needed to know about the situation. I was most definitely f*cked. After apologizing profusely and explaining how the wax that was currently covering and cooling on my skin wasn't used for waxing legs, arms, and underarms, let alone bikinis, she left the room to get a new wax that she coated over the other one. When she pulled the strips of this wax, the other one came off, too. Needless to say, it hurt, and the damage was already done. I had bruises on my thighs, inner thighs, and bikini area. The woman then proceeded to finish the waxing and apologized again. At least she didn't charge me one cent for the ‘service.’ I, however, can't say I ever went back to that salon again.” —Lupita T.

“I was bartending right out of college, and one of the servers was training to be an aesthetician. She was like, ‘I need to do a guy, so it would be free of charge!’ So I agreed. Since she was training, the salon owner was in the room, as well, and did the first half of my wax, taking her time to point out the ‘intricacies’ of doing a male Brazilian. Then my friend finished doing the second side. Of course it hurt, but the worst part was that it took basically three hours since they were talking about each step, and my friend was asking for advice. Not only was I crotch-up for that whole time, but that's a long time to be going through the pain. They were closing soon, and she hadn't done my ass yet. She offered that I could come back for that portion. I politely agreed, then never went back.” —Tony M.

10 Powerful Responses to Caitlyn Jenner's Debut From the Trans Community

"For a transgender person to step into the world as his or her authentic self is a moment of tremendous freedom."

If anyone in the greater Kardashian/Jenner clan broke the Internet, it was Caitlyn Jenner (formerly Bruce). When she made her debut on the cover of Vanity Fair yesterday, social media exploded.

And the response was overwhelmingly supportive: Caitlyn herself joined Twitter (earning a record one million followers in four hours) and Facebook, and the hashtag #CallMeCaitlyn began trending almost immediately. Celebrities from Kerry Washington to Jesse Tyler Ferguson offered up words of encouragement, and the transgender community was no exception.

RELATED: Caitlyn Jenner: 'I'm a Better Person Than Bruce.'

While many in the transgender community spoke about the opportunities Caitlyn has created for others and just gave all-out kudos, some pointed out that she has more resources and a stronger support network than many transgender men and women.

Here is the response from a small sampling of the transgender community, in their own words:

Orange Is the New Black star Laverne Cox, via Tumblr:

“I am so moved by all the love and support Caitlyn is receiving. It feels like a new day, indeed, when a trans person can present her authentic self to the world for the first time and be celebrated for it so universally. Many have commented on how gorgeous Caitlyn looks in her photos, how she is ‘slaying for the gods.’ I must echo these comments in the vernacular, Yasss Gawd! Werk Caitlyn! Get it!’

...Most trans folks don’t have the privileges Caitlyn and I now have. It is those trans folks we must continue to lift up, get them access to healthcare, jobs, housing, safe streets, safe schools, and homes for our young people. We must lift up the stories of those most at risk, statistically trans people of color who are poor and working class. I have hoped over the past few years that the incredible love I have received from the public can translate to the lives of all trans folks. Trans folks of all races, gender expressions, ability, sexual orientations, classes, immigration status, employment status, transition status, genital status etc. I hope, as I know Caitlyn does, that the love she is receiving can translate into changing hearts and minds about who all trans people are as well as shifting public policies to fully support the lives and well being of all of us. The struggle continues...”

Janet Mock, author, advocate, and host of SoPOPular! on MSNBC:

Nick Adams, GLAAD’s director of programs, transgender media:

"For a transgender person to step into the world as his or her authentic self is a moment of tremendous freedom. The world can now see what Caitlyn Jenner has always known, that she is—and always has been—a woman.

Transgender comedian Ian Harvie:

Trangender reporter Zoey Tur on CNN:

“This is a highly professional rollout of a product. And it was all timed…for sweeps. This is all highly produced. You’ve got to hand it to Jenner’s camp. This is brilliant marketing. For anyone to say that this is a transgender person moving at their pace is absurd.”

Tiq Milan, writer and advocate:

January Hunt, Brooklyn-based artist, writer, and musician:

“I am happy for Caitlyn as an individual with an internal struggle that she is now overcoming with the specific intention of actualizing her own self. I believe anyone with the ability, who takes agency of their own body and who examines themselves by digging through the darkest parts of their history and identity, is an incredible survivor. That is the part of me that feels immense gratitude for people like Caitlyn Jenner sharing their story so publicly. When I started transitioning and when I was a teenager, there were no trans women on TV or gracing the covers of magazines. I looked up to people who I read about in books; folks who weren't still alive.

That said, when a white woman from the most sensationalized family in the western world, with more resources than any trans woman I have ever known, follows a prescribed medical narrative for trans women, it is hard for me to not think about the people who don't have this kind of access. It is hard for me to think of how many trans women of color died this year and how there are more obituaries than magazine covers or ‘success’ stories; how 41 percent of trans people attempt suicide because they don't have access to this kind of healthcare or support; how many trans women I have known or read about who died by their own hands because that seemed like the best way out. I think of the struggle to access certain affirming surgeries I have longed for—struggles that money and the medical industrial complex have both prevented me from having access to actualize MY own self.

These things are complicated. I am happy to see them happening, but I don't want Caitlyn Jenner's story to define a trans narrative. Her story is hers. Mine is mine. The millions of trans lives out there all have individual stories, many of which may never survive to have them heard.”

Michael Silverman, executive director of the Transgender Legal Defense and Education Fund on MSNBC:

"Congratulations to Caitlyn, how remarkable. She looks positively radiant. And I use that word in the literal sense. In the video that accompanied the cover, Caitlyn spoke so movingly about the struggle, the secret she felt she had to keep, and you know, it shines through. She looks positively unburdened and absolutely radiant."

"I think it’s having an impact on the whole country, and it’s incredible. Last year we had the phenomenal Laverne Cox on the cover of Time magazine, and now we have another major media moment with Caitlyn Jenner on the cover of Vanity Fair. It’s opening a dialogue with people about the struggles and challenges that transgender people face that we haven’t had before. Caitlyn Jenner is a celebrity of course, and she is shining a spotlight on the day-to-day challenges that people face. Your average transgender person struggles in a lot of ways just to do simple things like get healthcare because they face insurance discrimination, or to get a job because they face employment discrimination. So I think we’re starting to see a lot of public interest in the unique challenges that transgender people face, and that’s a great thing."

11 Guys Told Us What They Honestly Think About BDSM

Do they all secretly want to be Christian Grey?

Writer E.L. James just announced she’s coming out with another novel in her saga, called Grey, which will be essentially the same story, except told from Christian Grey’s perspective instead of Anastasia Steele’s.

I assume the book will give some insight into why Christian was all about bondage and submission—though those insights will be fictional and will be coming from the mind of a middle-aged woman.

So I asked some real live guys to anonymously share what they thought about BDSM, if they’d ever had any experience with any BDSM fetishes, and if they were curious about it and/or open to trying it.

“I’d been curious about it for a while, I guess. That’s why I agreed to go see the Fifty Shades of Grey movie with my girlfriend on Valentine’s Day. She didn’t know I was already fine with doing some of that stuff with her if she wanted to, so she thought the movie might get me in the mood to try some of it. We did afterward. It was fine, nothing too amazing, really. But we didn’t get too crazy with it. I think it was light BDSM. Just some rope and handcuffs, stuff like that. No flogging or leather bodysuits or anything.”

“I’ve never done it. The chance hasn’t really come up, but I don’t think I want to try it. I’m a little bit worried I’d like it too much or something, to be honest, because I’ve always been kind of a control freak. Why do you think I work as a project manager?”

RELATED: A Beginner’s Guide to Kink

“At first, I was hesitant. I’d been dating a girl for a while, and she wanted to give it a try. It seemed unnecessary to me, but I didn’t want to p*ssy out, so one night we did. We’ve done it a few times since, and we both really like it, but it hasn’t become something we have to do to enjoy one another sexually. More like a special treat that involves handcuffs and a lot of role-play.”

“It seems a little weird to me, to be honest. Both of my parents raised me to be very gentlemanly and a little bit old-fashioned, and I feel like most things that would be defined as BDSM are too out there for me. I guess a lot of people might be drawn to it because they’re sick of all the old-school societal and sexual things, but I don’t think it’d do it for me. But if someone I loved really wanted to try it, I’d be down to discuss it. And I’d probably…I don’t know, dabble?”

“When Fifty Shades of Grey got really popular, I was curious about BDSM. So I found some porn and watched it, but it didn’t do anything for me. I can count on my right hand how many times I’ve watched porn and not masturbated to it, and that was one of those times. It just seems unnecessary. There was nothing about it that really turned me on. I will say, though, that I haven’t ever been with someone long enough to get to the point where we feel like we need to do something to spice things up in the bedroom. I guess when I get to that point, my mind might change.”

RELATED: The Number of Times Handcuffs, Whips, and Blindfolds Appear in 50 Shades

“I’ve done it a lot, so yeah, I like it. I was curious for a while, and I brought it up with a girl I was seeing. She was curious, too, and we decided to buy some toys and give it the old college try. It’s hard to pinpoint what exactly turns me on about it, but it’s probably that it’s a role you’re playing, and it’s an escape. There’s nothing submissive or dominant about our relationship outside of the bedroom, so it’s nice to act like we’re other people every once in a while. I’ve had some serious orgasms doing light BDSM.”

“I’m curious about it in some ways, but not in the way that I’m turned on by it or want to try it. I think there are probably a lot of psychological implications that go with wanting to do BDSM and actually going through with it, to the point that if I did I don’t think I’d be able to enjoy it. I’d probably fixate too much on what it meant in the grand scheme of things.”

“I have never tried it, but I’ll try anything once. That’s especially if I was with someone who wanted it. If it turns her on, I’ll give it a shot and hope that it turns me on, too.”

“Dude, I’m really curious about BDSM. I’ve never done it, but I’d really like to. I feel like it has to be awesome because so many women have gone crazy over [the Fifty Shades of Grey] books. I’ve heard they’re horribly written, so there has to be something to the actual content, right? It’s not like people are reading them because the author is the next coming of James Joyce.”

“The first time I did BDSM, it was with a girl who had done it before and was totally into stuff like that. She owned a sex swing and everything. That first time, I did it just to do it. So I guess you can say I was curious. It’s like how you want to try anal at least once, just to see what all the fuss is about. I’ve done it a few times since, and I like it. I’m not a freak about it or anything. I don’t go to those weird bondage parties, but it’s cool to get out of your sexual comfort zone.”

“I was dating a girl, and we watched the Fifty Shades of Grey movie together one night. I don’t know what some of the things they did in that movie would be like in real life, but I couldn’t take it seriously on the screen. I kept laughing during the sex scene because it all just seemed kind of ridiculous and campy.”

Is It Bad for Your Health to Hold in a Fart?

If only it were acceptable to let it rip in public…

Even though farting is a fact of life, it's not exactly something you want to do in polite company—or even in front of someone who knows all your flaws, like your significant other. As an alternative, maybe you hold it in for hours until you're alone and can get the sweet, sweet release of letting it all out. It's a normal urge, but can keeping your gas bottled tight screw with your system? Here’s what you need to know.

Gas 101
When your body tries to get rid of gas buildup, it'll either do so via a belch that leaves your mouth or flatulence that escapes from your rectum. Burping is often a result of "air aphasia," a.k.a. eating air. "Some people tend to swallow more air when they talk or chew gum,” says Lisa Ganjhu, a doctor of osteopathy and a clinical assistant professor of medicine and gastroenterology at NYU Langone Medical Center in New York City. “That air collects in their stomachs before eventually coming out, usually as a burp."

RELATED: What Your Gas Is Trying to Tell You About Your Health

Unlike burping, farting causes are a little less straightforward. "Sometimes bacteria or food ferment in the stomach, leading to acidity and gas," says Ganjhu. Food issues like lactose or gluten intolerance can also turn you into a tooting machine. Even if your tummy can handle milk and wheat like a pro, cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and asparagus contain fructans, carbohydrates that are a little tougher to digest and can lead to more gas as your body tries to break them down, says Ganjhu.

So Can You Just Hold It In?
Breathe a sigh of relief: Chances are highly unlikely it'll seriously affect your health, says Ganjhu. But try as you might, if your body wants to get rid of some extra air, it's going to happen eventually. "You pass gas 10 to 20 times a day, often without even realizing it,” she says. “It's a normal byproduct of your digestion of food." Sure, while you're focused on clenching your buns together like it's the last rep of barre class, you might manage to keep everything inside. But as soon as you get distracted, the floodgates will probably open. "As you're walking and going about your business, your body will pass the air," says Ganjhu.

That being said, the only real exception to the "holding in your farts won't seriously injure you" rule is people who have severe obstructions in their colons. "In that case, the colon blows up like a balloon because of the blockage,” says Ganjhu. “If there are any weaknesses in the walls, eventually it can burst." Although that paints a frighteningly vivid picture, there's no real reason to be worried, says Ganjhu; that kind of thing only happens with critically ill patients, and even then, it's rare.

RELATED: What to Do When You Fart During Yoga Class (And Other Downward Dog Dilemmas)

And although holding in your gas won't actually harm you, it can still make you feel like a sausage in too-tight casing. "Your digestive tract is like one of those big balloons clowns use to make animals,” says Ganjhu. “Anything that affects downstream will affect upstream.” What she means is any sort of air buildup lower in your gastrointestinal tract, like in your colon, will eventually push upward and cause bloating and discomfort around your midsection.

Your Farting M.O.
Your best bet is to excuse yourself to the restroom where you can relieve yourself in peace. Better now, when you expect it, than to have one squeak out in the middle of a meeting because you're trying to hold it in, right? If your goal is to cut down on your farting in the first place, try consuming more probiotics, which can help align the bacteria in your gut. "Fermented foods like yogurt, kimchi, and sauerkraut, are all good ways to get more probiotics, or you can try probiotic pills specifically for your digestive tract," says Ganjhu. (For more ways to keep everything in your gut chugging along smoothly, load up on these foods that are essential for a healthy GI system.)

And if you needed another reason to stay away from fake sweeteners, here you have it: "Fat-free and sugar-free sweeteners are full of non-absorbable sugars, which are non-digestible and come out as gas or diarrhea," says Ganjhu.

Caitlyn Jenner: I'm a 'Better Person Than Bruce.'

Plus, more gorgeous photos from her Vanity Fair cover shoot

Just a little over a month after speaking with Diane Sawyer, Caitlyn Jenner is now opening up to Vanity Fair. In an interview with writer Buzz Bissinger, Caitlyn describes how she's a whole lot nicer than Bruce. She tells the story of receiving a letter from a transgender woman in New York, saying that she called the woman after reading the letter. "Bruce never would have called her," says Caitlyn. She says that her son, Burt, even told her, “To be honest with you, I think Caitlyn is a lot better person than Bruce."

How else do the two differ? In the interview, Buzz says Bruce was the cheapest person he ever met, while Caitlyn is willing to send a plane so that her mom can come visit her (her mom hasn't met Caitlyn yet in person). "What I told her: 'Isn’t Caitlyn a much better friend?'" says Caitlyn. "Bruce, he would never send a plane. No, no, no, what a jerk the guy was."

In a poignant moment, Caityln says that being featured on the cover of Vanity Fair, in some ways, is even more special to him than his Olympic gold medal. "It’s not about the fanfare, it’s not about people cheering in the stadium, it’s not about going down the street and everybody giving you 'that a boy, Bruce,' pat on the back, okay," she says. "This is about your life and about who you are. And the last few days have been absolutely amazing, you know, I never thought, you know, that some day I’d be able to do this."

Bruce isn't the only one who's broken a world record; after joining Twitter yesterday, Caitlyn reached one million followers in just four hours, giving her the fastest-grossing Twitter account ever (Barack Obama previously held the record).

Way to go, Caitlyn!
