7 Wacky, WTF Ways People Have Found Love

Including...wait for it...SeaCaptainDate.com

You know all about online dating destinations like Match.com and eHarmony, but then there are the niche options—like GlutenFreeSingles.com—that you hear about from time to time. They beg the question: Does anyone really find lasting love on something like FarmersOnly.com or STDMatch.net, though? Oh, yes. These seven couples are living proof.

1. SeaCaptainDate.com
As a voiceover artist originally from Reading, Pennsylvania, Amanda Angelis was looking for adventure. So when she found SeaCaptainDate.Com, a site that connects people who work out at sea with people who share a love for the ocean, she decided to try it out. Amanda also really has a thing for guys with beards, so a scruffy tour-boat captain named Van Wagner caught her eye. And although he showed up clean-shaven to their first date, the couple's been together for more than a year.

2. TattooPassions.com
Five years ago, when Christine Villareal’s boyfriend dumped her because he claimed his family would never accept her tattoos, she went looking for someone who would love every detail about her and her ink. After Googling “tattoo dating site,” she quickly found TattooPassions.com—and Rob Villarreal, who had sleeves on each arm and some eye-catching tats across his chest that might as well have read marriage material. The couple tied the knot in Arizona in February 2013 and now have a six-month-old daughter named Autumn. Naturally, Christine commemorated her birth with a tattoo of her daughter's name and bear cubs.

3. GlutenFreeSingles.com
When Pia Stroebel went online looking for a gluten-free restaurant in November 2013, she accidentally stumbled onto glutenfreesingles.com and wound up finding a completely different kind of dish. Nearly two years after meeting Dale Graff online, Pia packed up her things in Connecticut and moved to live with Dale in Montana.

4. STDMatch.net
Julie, 28 who was diagnosed with genital herpes at 18, wanted someone who would accept and understand her situation—and she found that in Peter. When they found each other online in May 2014, Peter had only recently learned he had herpes. “It was always hard on me because I was concerned I would give it to somebody,” says Julie. Now, it's turned into a way to connect with someone.

5. FarmersOnly.com
Elizabeth and Artie Thompson connected on this niche dating site and quickly bonded about their love for agriculture and country living. (Elizabeth was raised on a dairy farm in Alabama, while Artie grew up on a corn and soybean farm in Ohio.) After finding one another in 2012, the two eloped last July. The two currently live outside of Boulder, Colorado, but are planning to move back to Elizabeth’s home state to grow soybeans and corn.

6. MillionaireMatch.com
Former charter flight attendant Dawn Van Gaalen was frustrated by the men she tried dating—so a friend suggested she check out MillionaireMatch.com "I didn't go on for money," she says. "I just wanted to be with someone more secure, mature, and established." She found all of the above in Darrell Nelson, an oil and gas product manufacturer and distributor. A year and a half later, Dawn and Darrell are still going strong and now share a palatial home in Canada.

7. BikerKiss.com
Kim Eaton was looking for organized motorcycle rides when she noticed an ad for bikerkiss.com. That led her to John, her now-husband. “After our first date, we both walked away knowing we’d get married," she says. They took their first motorcycle ride together on New Year’s Day 2013—it was through New Jersey—although the couple no longer rides (John’s been in two life-threatening accidents since the couple tied the knot). “If he never rides again, I don’t know if I will ride again," says Kim. "Motorcycles aren’t the love of my life—he is.”
