9 Beauty Lessons I Learned from My Cat

She taught me everything I know.

I’ve always been impressed by how much effort my four-year-old orange tabby puts into her grooming routine. In fact, I’ve learned a lot just by watching my kitty do her thing. Seriously, when it comes to beauty, this petite little feline knows what she’s doing. (Here she is lounging in her favorite place—a box. Sorry, I just couldn’t resist sharing a pic!)

When you think about it, is there any other animal on the planet that spends more time making sure she looks damn fine? And sure, we might be different species, but that doesn’t mean you can’t incorporate any of their grooming habits into your own beauty routine. This is some genius advice—straight from the prettiest kitties out there.

1. Everyone Needs Their Beauty Sleep
…and lots of it if you want to keep that youthful glow. Yup, the reason your cat looks three years old even though she’s 10 is because she gets plenty of shut-eye every day.

2. Drinking Water Does the Skin Good
H2O plumps up the skin, making it—and in turn, you—look younger. It’s no wonder fur babies everywhere guzzle up the stuff all day long.

3. A Beautiful Mane Takes Serious Work
Hate to break it to you ladies, but maintaining a gorgeous, healthy head of hair requires a major time commitment—something that Fluffy has understood since the minute she was born. That’s why she spends most of her waking hours making sure her shiny fur coat stays in top condition.

4. And So Does a Sharp Set of Nails
Filing is part of her daily routine—and it should be part of yours, too (although you don't have to destroy any furntiure on your quest for well-groomed nails).

5. Yoga Is a Major Glow-Booster
Stretching isn’t just beneficial for your bod—it’s awesome for your complexion, too. So follow your kitten’s example by booking it to a yoga class tomorrow morning.

6. Practicing Good Hygiene Is a Must
Yeah, cats are lazy—but they still manage to clean themselves off every single day. So no matter how exhausted you feel, you should never, ever skip showering or taking off your makeup at night. (Very bad things can happen if you do.)

7. Exfoliating Is a Crucial Skin-Care Step
She prefers using cardboard, but you should stick to a scrub—preferably one with glycolic acid, thank you very much.

8. Don’t Forget About Your Smile
Just like us humans, cats can develop gum disease, which is why you may have seen cat toothpaste at your local pet store. So make sure you brush and floss twice a day—your dentist will thank you.

9. It Feels Freakin’ Amazing to Be Pampered By Somebody Else
Really—does this even need an explanation?
