How to De-Clutter Your Closet So You Actually Enjoy Getting Dressed

It should be your happy place, not a war zone.

I don't know about you, but I take my closet organization very seriously. There's something about walking into a neatly organized closet that gives the perfectionist side of my brain a thrill like nothing else does. While it's certainly not always pristine (especially right before a date night when all of a sudden nothing fits me anymore and I go through everything like a crazy lady), I do try my best to keep it as neat as I can. If you need a little help in the closet organization department, here are my favorite ways to keep the clutter at bay.

Hang Your Tall Boots
This is a great way to keep your tall boot collection organized and in line. I used to keep them all in a row on the floor, but tall boots can be a bit top-heavy, and so they were always falling over onto each other, and then they looked more like a "heap of boots" than a line of boots. Clip skirt hangers to the tops of them to hang them all in a neat row for easy access. Just be mindful not to get a sharp hanger closures that will leave marks in your leather—go for rubber-tipped closures instead.

Put Away Seasonal Clothes
Even though it's a bit of a pain to make the switch for the colder or warmer half of the year, I always go through my closet and put away any items that are "off-season." This will save you space by not forcing you to have all of your clothes out at once (those winter sweaters and coats can take up so much room), and it makes looking for items faster because you only have your seasonally appropriate items available.

Use Shoe Organizers for Non-Shoe Items, Too
Those hanging shoe racks are great for shoes (duh), but I also use a lot of them around the house to organize other things. I have one in our entryway coat closet to store our winter hats and gloves, and I keep a few in my closet as well to store folded scarves, belts, and sunglasses, in addition to shoes.

Set a Hanger Limit and Schedule Closet Purges
Getting rid of items you don't wear on a regular basis is a key part of keeping your closet clutter-free. It's a good trick to only buy "X" amount of hangers, and then anytime you are out of hangers, you have to get rid of a few things before you can hang your new items up. You can donate used clothing to local charities, have a clothing swap night with your girlfriends (cocktails mandatory!), or have a closet sale on Instagram. Also, when you do your seasonal wardrobe switch, try on everything you are pulling out to decide which items you are no longer that passionate about.

Use Vintage Hat Boxes for Storage
I love keeping a row of fun vintage hat boxes at the top of my closet. They are great for storing hats, of course, but also for keeping smaller items like fancy clutches that I don't use everyday. Even if you don't have anything to put in them, they still add a touch of cute!

Hang Your Jeans
I used to only keep my jeans folded, but you know how it is—they all end up in one big pile, and you have to dig to get to the bottom to find that one pair you're looking for. By folding jeans halfway over a hanger, you can see all of your options at once, and you don’t have to disturb the other pairs to select the ones you want to wear.

And Hang Clothes by Category and Color
The best way to keep your closet organized and your item-searching time to a minimum is to hang your items by category (jackets, pants, dresses, sweaters, etc.) and then organize each category by color. Then, if you're looking for your favorite gray T-shirt, you'll know exactly where to go (and your closet looks so pretty!).

Create a Jewelry Station
Install a small shelf in your closet to be your jewelry station, where you can store all of your wearable accessories. Hang hooks for necklaces, place ring holders and dishes for rings, and use something tall like a bottle for stacking bracelets. It’s so much easier to find items, and you can try them on right there with your outfit to see if they work together.

These are all simple tips, but when you put them together, it can make a huge difference in how your closet looks and operates. I'm pretty sure you can hear the clothes whispering, "Thank you!" if you listen hard enough. Hope these ideas will make it into your closet soon!
