On a dare from her daughters, Barbara Tatge kissed a Wellesley spectator at the Boston Marathon, then launched a search to try to find him.
It had all the trappings for a perfect runner's romance, but unfortunately, the Tennessee woman won't be running off into the sunset with the man she said had “such a great smile.”

Over the weekend, John Doe's wife came forward with a letter to Tatge via the Wellesley Townsman. The pair has requested to remain anonymous.
“We all thought this story was hilarious because it is just like my husband to do that,” the man’s wife said in her letter. “It was one of many memorable stories from a great weekend in Boston.”

Like Tatge, the mystery man’s wife also happened to be running her first Boston that day and learned about the now famous kiss soon after the race.
“When this story aired on the news, we were pretty surprised,” John Doe’s wife added in the letter. “For me, I’m not mad. Believe me, our friends have gotten a lot of mileage out of this story, and I have thoroughly enjoyed watching them give my husband grief!”
For Tatge, it didn’t matter whether or not the man she smooched was available. She just wanted an answer that would quiet the nagging feeling that maybe she should’ve gotten his number.

But now that she has her answer, Tatge is relieved the man’s wife finds the situation entertaining.
“He is fortunate to be married to a gracious woman with a wonderful sense of humor,” Tatge told Runner’s World Newswire. “Moving forward, I suspect that her husband will stand farther back in the crowd of spectators at future races, and I won’t be seeking out random strangers to kiss along the route of my next race.”
