This Is How the Majority of America Really Feels About Caitlyn Jenner

A new survey shows what kind of impact people think she’s having.

When Caitlyn Jenner made her official debut on the cover of Vanity Fair, the response was overwhelmingly positive. She even broke a social media record, earning one million followers on Twitter in four hours.

And she’s continuing to break barriers: A new survey from NBC News on Caitlyn and transgender bias found that most people think the 65-year-old will help society become more accepting of transgender people (66 percent, to be exact).

The survey was conducted online earlier this month and polled 2,153 adults about various transgender topics.

Unfortunately, 82 percent of the people surveyed said that they think transgender people in their community face “some” or “a lot” of stigma or negative social judgment.

But the majority of participants think things will get better for the transgender community, saying they believe transgender people will be “a little more” accepted by society in 10 years. And nearly 30 percent said they think transgender people will be accepted “a lot” more.

According to UCLA’s The Williams Institute, nearly 700,000 people in the U.S. are transgender, making up just 0.3 percent of the American population. While they are in a definite minority, transgender people are often the target of hate crimes: The Transgender Law & Policy Institute cites data that found transgender people account for 20 percent of all murders of LGBT people.

The transgender community also has a disproportionally high suicide rate. More than 50 percent of transgender people will attempt suicide at least once by their 20th birthday, according to the Youth Suicide Prevention Program.

Caitlyn has said that she hopes speaking openly about transgender issues may help others. “How many people go through and just waste an entire life because they never deal with themselves, to be who they are?” she says in a promo for her new documentary series. “Maybe this is my greatest calling in life.”
