Lauren Conrad Bans The Word ‘Skinny’ from Her Website

One small step for L.C., one big step for women everywhere

Lauren Conrad is known for looking flawless, entertaining, and—oh yeah—a little reality show called The Hills. And now she’s hoping to add promoting body positivity to the list.

In a new letter published on her website, Lauren explains that she and her editorial team have decided to avoid using the word “skinny” on LaurenConrad.com.

“Starting this month, we’ll be banning any body-shaming terms from the site and replacing them with words like ‘fit,’ ‘toned,’ and ‘healthy,’” she wrote. “We try do to this for the most part anyway, but now we’re making it official. The word ‘skinny’ will now be reserved for skinny jeans.”

The 29-year-old says she wants the overall message of her fitness content to be about health instead of weight. “We want to make sure that the focus is on being fit as opposed to a number on the scale,” she wrote. “Every body is created differently—and healthy bodies come in all shapes and sizes.”

Lauren said the site will still provide fitness tips and continue her “bikini boot camp” series—you just won’t see the S-word anywhere in there.

According to the National Eating Disorders Association, 20 million women and 10 million men suffer from a clinically significant eating disorder at some time in their life (including anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating), and mass media provide a “significantly influential context” for people to learn about body ideals.

The association says that many people also struggle with body dissatisfaction and it impacts kids as young as 6: Up to 60 percent of elementary school girls are concerned about their weight or about becoming too fat.

Commenters on Lauren's site applauded the effort.

“LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS!" wrote one. "Choosing to focus on health and not size has changed how I see food and exercise—focusing on positive additions rather than restrictions makes it actually fun."

“I love that you will be doing this with a focus on health and fitness,” wrote another. “The best part is, when you work out to be toned and healthy, you look amazing, too."

Her Twitter followers were also fans of the move:
