This Woman Used to Get Orgasms IN HER FOOT

Here's how that's actually possible.

If you have a foot fetish, you may be on to something. Apparently there's a woman living in the Netherlands who used to have five to six orgasms a day in her left foot, reported The Science of Us yesterday. Um, what?

According to the original case report, which was published in The Journal of Sexual Medicine in 2013, the 55-year-old woman, referred to as Mrs. A, had a sepsis infection in 2008. While in the hospital, she started to feel tingling sensations in her foot. A year and a half later, she started having the orgasms. Mrs. A wanted treatment because she "felt very embarrassed by these attacks and was worried about recurrences," wrote study author Marcel D. Waldinger, M.D., Ph.D., a neuropsychiatrist and professor in sexual psychopharmacology at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. He said this is the first reported case of what he calls "foot orgasm syndrome."

"Mrs. A did not complain of pain in her left foot but reported the experience of a real orgasm in her left foot, similar to a vaginal/clitoral orgasm but of shorter duration than a vaginally/clitorally induced orgasm," wrote Waldinger in the study. But here's where things get really interesting: "When making love to her husband, Mrs. A experienced a vaginal/clitoral orgasm, which was immediately followed by the same orgasmic sensation in her left foot," wrote Waldinger. So while some of her foot orgasms occured spontaneously without any sexual arousal, wrote Waldinger, some were brought on by sexual pleasure.

How is this even possible? In a 2013 interview with LiveScience, Waldinger said an MRI showed no abnormalities in Mrs. A's brain or foot—but another test did show some differences in the nerves of her left and right feet. In the study, Waldinger explained that it's unknown whether her foot orgasms had anything to do with the central effects of her brain since she didn't get an MRI on her brain while she was having a foot orgasm. The most likely explanation, he wrote, is that Mrs. A had damage to the nerves in her foot after her bout with sepsis. As the nerve damage began to heal, she started having the orgasms, which may have been caused by some confusion among the nerves.

Waldinger also noted that this case study was of only one woman—a serious limitation—but he speculates there are similar cases out there and he hopes talking about this phenomenon more will get more people talking.

The good news is that Mrs. A no longer has foot orgasms. She got an injection of anesthesia into one of the segments of the spinal cord that serves the foot, which stopped the sensations. The even better news is that she's still able to have vaginal orgasms, which if we had to guess, feel a heck of a lot more enjoyable anyway.
