How to Hide a Weird Tan Line

Now is the time of the summer when wedding season conveniently dovetails with weird tanline season—and this season’s super strappy styles aren’t helping matters much. Sure, showing up with ghosts of spaghetti straps on your shoulders isn’t the worst thing in the world—but we can all agree it’s less than ideal.

There’s an easy and foolproof solution to this predicament: Aerosol makeup spray, which is a stay-put hybrid of lotion, foundation, cover-up and bronzer. “It’s what all of us do for clients on the red carpet,” says makeup artist Deanna Mellusso, who works with Olivia Wilde and Ashley Benson.

If you’re in a pinch, Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs ($13) is at every drugstore, and comes in five convincing shades. If you’re feeling fancy, Diorskin Air Flash Spray Foundation ($62) comes in ten colors. Neither of these will rub off on your clothes, so as long as you let it set for a few minutes after application. (Full disclosure: Although we personally have not had this problem, some reviews online say it can rub off slightly on white clothing.)

So, to blur that bold tan line, here’s what to do: Take a shower, making sure to exfoliate. A soft loofah or a wash with gentle fruit acids will work. Dry off; but before you get dressed, mist the spray on the area you’re trying to cover. “Don’t spray too close or you’ll get build-up,” says Mellusso. “Six inches is usually good.” Then, use a damp makeup sponge to dab and blend it into your skin. Don’t use your hands or you’ll find yourself having to really scrub them clean in a few minutes.

Once you get dressed, you”ll be able to shake, shimmy and groove on even the sweatiest dance floors. And when you’re ready to take it off, soap and water do the trick. Cheers to a lifetime of love, sunshine and hidden tanlines!
