You know those things in life that you know you shouldn’t watch (but do anyway)? We’ve got another one for you.
A YouTube video of an unidentified woman having surgery on her lip has gone viral. In it, a doctor tugs at a grape-sized bump on her lip while she remains strangely calm. And then…he pulls out a maggot.

That’s right: She had a nasty, inch-long creature stuck inside her lip.

We don’t have any details on the woman, the doctor, the maggot, or how the heck she remained so freaking calm during the ordeal, but women’s health expert Jennifer Wider, M.D., says this kind of thing can happen.
“Her lip had to have become infested,” says Wider. “Most likely a fly somehow laid an egg in there. It can happen in any body opening.”

Wider says it’s possible the woman suffered from oral myiasis, an infestation of people or animals with larvae that feed on the host’s dead or living tissue, liquid bodily substances, or ingested food.
Oral myiasis is caused by the larvae of a specific kind of fly that’s found in third-world countries (i.e., not the U.S.), so you shouldn’t freak out, says Wider. (Although maybe steer clear of lip-infesting flies when you’re traveling abroad.)
Wider isn’t sure how the larvae got into the woman’s lip, although it’s possible it happened through a cut or abrasion.

However, she says the average person shouldn’t worry: “If it were common, this video wouldn’t have gone viral.”
