The Perfect Playlist for Your Toughest Abs Workouts

It'll help you push your way to a chiseled midsection.

Every week, Your New Favorite Playlist introduces you to workout-worthy tunes from a different fitness brand. This week, BARE, a new class at Crunch Gym, shares a playlist.

You know how hard it can feel to balance on one leg sometimes? Imagine a workout class where you're doing variations on that the entire time. That's basically the concept behind BARE, a new class from Crunch Gym. "What makes BARE unique from any other barefoot workout is that we creatively integrate a single-leg balance into every single exercise," says Emily Splichal, a podiatrist and the creator of the class. "With single-leg exercises as the most effective way for strengthening the core and glutes, this challenging workout leaves members feeling strong, flexible, aligned, and confident. Or simply stated, this is one tough core- and glute-training workout!"

Splichal likes to use the music to "inspire movement" when she teaches BARE classes. "There must be an intro, a slow build to your peak, and then a gradual return to the cool down," she says. Here's the mix from a recent class:

How to Cover Up Any Type of Scar

And how to get rid of them for good.

Some wear their marks as a badge of honor (mastered skateboarding!); others aren't quite so fond (we get it). For those in the second camp, new advances help make scars vanish for the night—or for good.

Keloid scar
uig phototake

LOOK AND FEEL: Rope-like and reddish or purplish, these grow over the wound site. They can range in size from a zit to an orange.

COVER IT: Choose an opaque concealer specifically designed for scars, such as Dermablend Quick-Fix Concealer ($28, dermablend.com). The concentrated pigments mean you don't have to layer on a ton of it, says makeup artist Melissa Street. Dab on a skin-tone shade with a small synthetic concealer brush, which will "get in the hard-to-reach crevices," says Street.

REMOVE IT: While steroid injections used to be popular for keloids, they often cause hypopigmentation on dark skin. Today, "I cut off most of the scar, then use a fractional ablative laser," says dermatologist Jill Waibel, M.D., owner of the Miami Dermatology and Laser Institute. This creates a small wound that the body then repairs like normal skin; it also removes overgrowth. It usually costs less than $1,000 (often covered by insurance) and takes 10 minutes.

LOOK AND FEEL: Usually red, raised, and contained to the actual size of the wound, these fade with time. Example: a C-section scar.

COVER IT: A cream formula can help smooth over the bumpy texture; pick a greenish tint to neutralize red tones. Once you've applied with a concealer brush, layer on a second cream that matches your skin color. Physicians Formula Concealer Twins 2-in-1 Correct & Cover Cream Concealer ($8, physiciansformula.com) comes with both parts.

REMOVE IT: Depending on the scar's thickness, you'll need two to seven injections of a corticosteroid like Kenalog (around $100 to $300 each, sometimes covered by insurance). Then wear silicone gel sheets (like ScarAway, $22, cvs.com) for eight to 12 weeks (new scars) or three to six months (old ones); they apply light pressure to prevent collagen from building back up. Your scar will still be visible but much less noticeable.

5 Abs Misconceptions That Will Keep You from Getting a Toned Tummy

Lies! Lies! Lies!

There's nothing more annoying than sticking to a healthy diet, logging countless hours at the gym, and still dealing with belly pooch that refuses to budge. Unfortunately, a lot of the methods you think sculpt flat abs are basically sexy-stomach saboteurs, and they're keeping you from reaching your goals. The good news: We've done some major myth busting to help you learn what actually works so you can get your best abs possible.

If you've been slashing carbohydrates like Freddy Krueger, this will come as a relief. "Some of my clients go on super restrictive diets that cut out entire food groups, like carbs, which drains their energy" says Jessica Cording, M.S., R.D., a dietitian in New York City. And that's a huge blow to your calorie-torching power at the gym.

While it's true that overdoing refined carbs can lead to bloat and extra weight, you can't perform at your peak fitness without a healthy carb intake. Your body needs carbohydrates from fruits, grains, and starchy vegetables to fuel itself for workouts and repair itself afterward, says Cording. When your body has carbs to use as energy, you can power through your sweat sessions and sculpt a sexier midsection.

RELATED: 10 Abs Exercises Better Than Crunches

If your workouts are giving all the muscles that make up your core FOMO, you're doing it wrong. Here's why: Your core includes all the muscles from just below your hips up to your ribs, says Mark Crabtree, C.S.C.S. If you want a well-defined midsection, you have to engage on all those areas, says Crabtree. And that's especially true for your back—which helps give you good posture and automatically makes you look slimmer. You should also get in on some oblique action because those muscle fibers run at an angle, and when they get stronger, they pull your waist in, says Crabtree. They're basically like your personal corset, minus the squished organs.

For visible abs, kick this myth to the curb, and start getting your healthy meal planning on. "Even if you work your abs to perfection, those amazingly strong stomach muscles will never be visible if they're covered in a layer of fat, says Crabtree. So load up on fruits, vegetables, lean protein, and whole grains, and pack your diet with bloat-blasting foods that aid digestion, like yogurt or potassium-rich options like avocado, bananas, and salmon, says Cording.

RELATED: 21 Snacks for Flat Abs

Crabtree says that the traditional gym philosophy is to work your whole body first and train your core last. But if your number one goal is to seriously tone up that area, core work should be your top priority in your routine. "If you strengthen your core earlier in the workout, you'll be less fatigued and better able to give it your full attention and energy," he says. "Also, saving abs for the end of your workout might force you to rush through those exercises because you're out of time."

RELATED: 6 Trainers' Favorite Workout Moves for Stronger, Flatter Abs

Maybe you've heard this before, but it bears repeating: Crunches are not the ultimate abs sculptor. "Crunches and situps are the mainstay of many people's abdominal programs, but those two exercises alone won't help you develop a defined stomach," says Crabtree. That's because your core's main priority is to protect your spine and keep you stable, but that typical situp motion isn't targeting all the muscles used for that function. What you really need for a strong midsection are moves that strengthen all of your stability muscles, like the plank, he says. "I've been doing them for a long time, and I still think they're very hard," he says. Switch up your plank variations to keep them from getting boring.

These Fart-Proof Pajama Pants Could Be the Key to a Successful Relationship

Unless you’re a fan of Dutch Ovens.

Let's be real: No one thinks farting in front of their partner is sexy. And we can't decide what's a bigger turn-off—when we're the ones who pass some gas or when it's our guys who let one rip (okay, we're pretty sure it's the latter). Well, you can now avoid a stinky situation thanks to a line of—wait for it—fart-proof underwear, pajama pants, and jeans from U.K.-based company Shreddies.

Um...whaaa? Here's how it works: Per the company's website, these "flatulance-filtering garments" feature a back panel made from a carbon-based material called Zorflex, which is supposed to absorb all those nasty fart odors. Washing the items reactivates the carbon so you can wear them again and again.

RELATED: Is It Bad for Your Health to Hold in a Fart?

While Shreddies released their line of women's and men's underwear in 2013, they just recently started selling pajama bottoms and jeans, as well. Shreddies manager Richard Woodley told Dezeen Magazine that more of the protective material has been added to these new pants so that the carbon lining actually goes from the waistband down to the right above the knee.

None of the garments hide the sound of farting, but that's okay—it's pretty easy to mask that by shifting around or moving something to create a masking noise. And we think fart-blocking pajama pants are particularly genius since tooting while you sleep is an all-too-common occurence. Hey, now you can load up on broccoli at dinnertime without having to worry about whether or not you'll be super gassy once you hit the sheets.

We know the holidays are months away, but the PJs seem like they'd make a great stocking stuffer for your dude (especially if he's got tummy issues), don't they? You'll never have to deal with him stinking up the bed again, and that's pretty sweet.

Kirsty Gallacher, Sky Sports Presenter

Women's Health U.K.

“If I was going to rate my body confidence out of 10, I’d say seven. This time last year, it would’ve been much lower, but after a divorce and juggling full-time work with two kids, I made the decision to start channeling my energy into positive things, and that includes getting into shape.”

Fran Halsall, European Champion Swimmer, Commonwealth Gold Medalist, and World Silver Medalist

Women's Health U.K.

“I have a very particular body shape—but I’ve accepted my big shoulders are the tools of my trade."

Jodie Kidd, Model and TV Presenter

Chloe Madeley, Presenter and Personal Trainer

Women's Health U.K.

"I was watching MTV and made a bet with my PT [and ex], Danny Young, that he couldn’t make my body look like Britney Spears’ circa ‘I’m a Slave 4 U.’ He proved me wrong in three weeks."

Lucy Mecklenburgh, Former TOWIE Star and Founder of Fitness Site ResultsWithLucy.com

Women's Health U.K.

“TOWIE didn’t just bring me fame; it made be bigger than I’d ever been before. I was drinking every night, living off pasta—I’d never worried about exercise or ‘no carbs before Marbs,’ but suddenly I couldn’t fit into my jeans. So two years ago, I started working with a PT, Celia Harris. I slimmed down quickly, and I’d wake up happier, more motivated—I wanted to get to the gym to push my body.”

[Editor's note for our U.S. readers: TOWIE is a very popular semi-reality show, and "Marbs" is short for Marbella, a fancy resort the characters vacation at.]

Sophie Hitchon, Olympic Hammer Thrower and Current British Record Holder

Women's Health U.K.

“I love my big thighs. I wouldn’t be able to pick up a hammer without them. I put blood, sweat, and tears into building them up. When I was younger, I always wished I was more petite or willowy; now, they’re a symbol of my success as an athlete.”

The September of Women's Health U.K. issue hits newsstands July 30.

Sorry, But Your Guac Might Have People Poo in It

Noooooo!

Well, this is disturbing: The FDA released an alert earlier this week that says some cilantro from Puebla, Mexico, has been contaminated with human feces. And you know what contains cilantro...your beloved guac.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and state public health officials noticed that there had been outbreaks of cyclosporiasis, a parasite-caused illness linked to severe diarrhea, for the past few years. After looking into the issue further, they found that the outbreaks appeared to be linked to the consumption of cilantro from Puebla. When the FDA and the Mexican regulatory authorities went on to investigate 11 farms and packing houses in the area, what they found at eight of those facilities wasn't pretty.

RELATED: 10 Insanely Delicious Guacamole Recipes

"Conditions observed at multiple such firms in the state of Puebla included human feces and toilet paper found in growing fields and around facilities," according to the FDA's alert. They also found "inadequately maintained and supplied toilet and hand-washing facilities (no soap, no toilet paper, no running water, no paper towels) or a complete lack of toilet and hand-washing facilities; food-contact surfaces (such as plastic crates used to transport cilantro or tables where cilantro was cut and bundled) visibly dirty and not washed; and water used for purposes such as washing cilantro vulnerable to contamination from sewage/septic systems."

All of those people out there who've been saying cilantro is nasty for years are shouting a collective "I told you so" right now.

What's a guac-loving woman to do in the face of this news? You may want to lay off of it for a while...or at least ask where the cilantro in it was grown. (For what it's worth, Chipotle told Bloomberg Business that all of its cilantro comes from California—so you can eat its guac without fear.)

A Doctor Weighs in on All Those Vagina-Tightening Products Out There

Do they actually work?

Let's make one thing clear: Vaginas come in a range of shapes, sizes, and colors, and one variety isn't better than any other. They're all pretty freaking amazing, and they can do some incredible stuff! However, if—for whatever reason—you find yourself wishing things were a little tighter down there, you might be wondering if there's anything you can do beyond kegels to help. So we spoke to a doctor to find out.

Vaginal Tightening Creams
A lot of OTC products that claim to tighten your vagina use ingredients that dry out the skin down there and make it feel tighter—but your gynecologist might not give it a thumbs up, says Alyssa Dweck, M.D., a gynecologist based in Westchester, New York. "I don't think products like these have been tested enough to know if they really work, and they might have a lot of chemicals that aren't great for your body." That being said, she says that it can't really hurt to try it—there's just no way to know if it's effective.
The verdict: Try them at your own risk.

RELATED: Does ‘Vagina Weightlifting’ Actually Get the Job Done?

Physical Therapy
The goal of most physical therapy to improve vaginal tightness is to teach women how to do kegels, says Mary Jane Minkin, M.D., clinical professor of ob-gyn at Yale School of Medicine. "Some women don't know how to use their muscles to do pelvic floor exercises," she says. Obviously, we know that kegel exercises definitely strengthen your pelvic floor muscles, but physical therapy sessions that also emphasize strengthening your core can also have an impact—albeit a small one. "Any time you strengthen your core, you're improving the strength of your pelvic floor," says Minkin.
The verdict: If you don't know how to do a kegel, this is for you.

RELATED: Exactly How to Use Kegels to Make Your Orgasms Stronger

Lasers
There are some lasers made for intra-vaginal use that emit low doses of carbon dioxide to help stimulate collagen growth. Unfortunately, they're typically used to reduce vaginal pain and dryness—not to change the size of the vagina, says Dweck. However, there is a device coming down the pike called Viveve that uses electrical pulses to tighten things up down there—but we'll have to wait until it's available in the U.S. to know more, she says.
The verdict: Skip it for now.

The bottom line: Unless you're willing to experiment with some creams that are potentially snake oil or wait for a futuristic laser, your best bet is to have a solid adult conversation with your partner about new ways to keep your sex life hot as both of your bodies change over time. (Hint: Here are 4 ways to make his penis feel bigger.)

Other than that, you can also utilize kegels, the trusty pelvic floor strengthener we know and love (if you're not sure you're doing it right, ask your gyno to put you in touch with a physical therapist).
