The NFL Just Hired Its First Female Coach, and She's Amazing

Touchdown!

In badass woman news, the Arizona Cardinals just hired Jen Welter as their assistant coaching intern for training camp and preseason work, and according to ESPN.com, she could be the first female coach of any kind in the history of the NFL. Boom.

Even if you don't love football, you've got to admit that this is a huge win for ladies everywhere. The 37-year-old, who will be helping to coach the team's linebackers, is no stranger to being the only woman at the office, so to speak. Last year, Jen played running back on her arena football team and was the first female to play a non-kicking position in the (usually) all-male Indoor Football League’s Texas Revolution. Oh, and she won two gold medals playing for the International Federation of American Football Women’s World Championship and has her master's in sport psychology and a Ph.D. in psychology, according to the Arizona Cardinals. Dang, girl, well done!

The head coach of the Cardinals, Bruce Arians, says he hopes that his newest coaching intern will help pave the way for other women to work in sports. "I thought she was the type of person that could handle this in a very positive way for women and open that door,” he said in a press release.

This move to bring a woman into the male-dominated industry of professional sports has been a bit of a trend this year. Just a few months ago, the NFL hired Sarah Thomas as the first full-time official, and the San Antonio spurs recruited Becky Hammon as the NBA's first female full-time coach

Let's keep it coming, people!
