How to Get the Softest and Shiniest Beachy Waves Ever

This summer hairstyle staple doesn’t have to leave your hair crunchy.

Last year, the Women’s Health Top Beauty Instagrammer contest brought in thousands of submissions from makeup- and hair-obsessed Insta-stars around the country. After sorting though every single amazing feed, we narrowed it down to one beauty guru who seriously impressed us. Jordan Smith, 24, lives and breathes beauty, approaches it from a healthy and fresh angle, and loves sharing her tips and looks with others. So for the rest of the summer, Jordan will be guest beauty blogging for WomensHealthMag.com. Check out her most recent post below, and follow her @JordanLinnaSmith, too!

Loose waves have always been a favorite, go-to hairstyle of mine, and I love wearing them in the summer, either to the beach or out with friends. This style looks even better on the second and third day, which is a nice bonus. (If roots get greasy, you may need to add a little dry shampoo after day one.) Here’s the how-to!

1. Start with dry, blown-out hair. Using a curling wand or one-inch curling iron (I love my Hot Tools iron!), take two-inch sections of hair and wrap them around the barrel, going away from your face.

2. If you like a little extra volume up top, use a teasing comb to backcomb the hair near your roots (a.k.a. comb the hair toward the scalp) for more fullness and body.

3. Run your fingers through your hair to loosen the curl, and then finish with a light mist of finishing spray. I love Aussie Aussome Volume Spray Gel ($4, drugstore.com) and have been using it for years! Or for more of a straight-off-the-beach look, spritz on a texturizing sea salt spray—my favorite is Not Your Mother’s Texturizing Sea Salt Spray ($6, ulta.com).

4. Coat fingers in a little nourishing oil—I like MoroccanOil Treatment ($43, moroccanoil.com)—and run it through your ends for shine and softness.

5. To get some hair off your face on a sizzling summer day, pin back the front two pieces (the ones near your temples) with bobby pins that either match your hair color or are bright and really make a statement. I love going to Anthropologie for hair accessories (like the Genuine Miracle Bobby Set, $15, anthropologie.com)—they’re so boho chic.
