Here's Why You’re Always So Damn Cold at Work

We need some corporate climate change.

Raise your hand if you regularly wear a sweater at work during the summer. Yeah, me too. In a recent article in The Washington Post called "Frigid offices, freezing women, oblivious men: An air-conditioning investigation," author Petula Dvorak goes into the very real struggle many women face at their workplace: It's too damn cold, and it's July!

"It’s the time of year desperate women rely on cardigans, pashminas, and space heaters to make it through the workweek in their frigid offices," writes Dvorak. "And their male colleagues barely notice."

It does seem like too many of us are walking around work (and plenty of other places outside of our homes, for that matter) in cute summer clothes, covered up with blah cardigans—or, in my case, a wool poncho that is more 1960s San Francisco than 2015 New York City.

While we know that the ability to regulate temperature varies from person to person and women tend to get cold more easily than men do, the situation begs the question: Who chooses what the thermostats are set at? Dvorak points the finger in the obvious direction: Men who are wearing head-to-toe suits.

"And then there are the men," Dvorak writes. "Stalwart in their business armor, manipulating their environment for their own comfort, heaven forbid they make any adjustments in what they wear. That’s right, my friends. Air conditioning is another big, sexist plot."

This might seem a bit hyperbolic, but Dvorak does have a point. Why should women have to bundle up when the guys could just as easily take off their jackets and roll up their sleeves? We're all adults here; we know that it gets hot in the summer and cold in the winter, and your clothes are going to change accordingly. Plus, maybe it's time men got more creative with their seasonal looks. Here are a few suggestions...

Or they could go full Luke Bryan and embrace the it's-casual-Friday-but-I-want-to-look-like-I-still-tried vibe.

There's really no benefit to being cold all the time. As Dvorak points out, being chilly doesn't keep us awake or make us more alert. It's actually just distracting, and our work suffers because of it.

"Researchers had their hands on the controls at an insurance office for a month," writes Dvorak. "And when they warmed the place from 68 to 77 degrees, typos went down by 44 percent and productivity went up by 150 percent."

If it only takes raising the temperature five degrees to increase productivity 150 percent, heating up the office kind of seems like a no brainer, right? Feel free to share that fact next time all the women in a meeting are chatting about how cold they are while the guys are drinking iced coffees and cranking up the AC.
