How to Make Your Face Look Shimmery and Sun-Kissed—No Skin Damage Necessary

Get your glow on the safe way.

Last year, the Women’s Health Top Beauty Instagrammer contest brought in thousands of submissions from makeup- and hair-obsessed Insta-stars around the country. After sorting though every single amazing feed, we narrowed it down to one beauty guru who seriously impressed us. Jordan Smith, 24, lives and breathes beauty, approaches it from a healthy and fresh angle, and loves sharing her tips and looks with others. So for the rest of the summer, Jordan will be guest beauty blogging for WomensHealthMag.com. Check out her most recent post below, and follow her @JordanLinnaSmith, too!

Thanks to celebrities like Kim Kardashian and YouTube beauty gurus like Jaclyn Hill, contouring hit the beauty world and stayed for dinner. But while this makeup technique can make your face look more defined, it can also add harshness.

If you’re a fan of a simpler look on hot-weather days (I know I am!), I recommend trying strobing and bronzing. They let you enhance specific parts of your face (like your gorgeous cheek bones!) without spending hours on the beach.

When it comes to bronzer, the key is to apply it to the appropriate areas (your upper forehead, your jawline, under your cheek bones, and, if you want, a little under your bottom lip for a more pouty look) for a natural-looking glow. To do so, simply swirl a fluffy brush into your bronzer and sweep the product onto those areas. It’s as easy as that.

Wet n Wild Color Icon SPF 15 Bronzer in Ticket to Brazil ($4, walmart.com) is a great drugstore bronzer option. If you’re a fan of high-end makeup, try Bobbi Brown Bronzing Powder ($40, sephora.com), which is available in five shades. And when it comes to brushes, the Too Faced Kabuki Brush ($34, sephora.com) is a solid choice—the synthetic hair grabs product and blends it into the skin evenly.

A little newer on the beauty scene but just as stunning in the summertime is strobing, a new take on highlighting. With this trend, the point is to emphasize the high points of the face. Creating a ‘T’ like pattern and add your chosen highlighter—I’m loving Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector in Opal ($41, sephora.com)—to the center of your forehead, down your nose, on the center of your chin, on top of your cheek bones, and on your cupid’s bow (for a fuller lip).

Here's a guide to exactly where on your face you should apply bronzer (the brown X's) and highlighter (the white X's):

It’s amazing how easy it is to create shimmery, touched-by-the-sun skin. It’s so simple that I have a feeling bronzing and strobing are going to become staples in your makeup routine year-round.
